Debbie Newman, executive director with the drop-in centre, says the Quality Hotel, at Edmonton Trail and McKnight Boulevard N.E., will soon serve as an important addition to the city's much-needed inventory of low-cost housing.
"There are so many people in the community who just cannot hertz car rentals prince rupert canada afford to make ends meet on a monthly basis. The cost of living has become astronomical," said Newman, estimating that more than half of the 1,070 people served by the drop-in centre every month are working.
"If you can't afford rent, you usually end up bunking up with another three or four people and that's not always the best situation to be in, if you're trying to make it on your own and be independent," she said.
Alberta Municipal Affairs spokesman Jerry Ward confirmed that the province provided just over $5 million from last year's budget hertz car rentals prince rupert canada to help with the $8-million purchase, the remainder of which the drop-in centre will continue fundraising for.
Area Ald. Gael MacLeod, who met with drop-in centre managers about the purchase two weeks ago, said she wants more information about the potential clientele and how surrounding residents might be affected.
Many will be low-income earners with no issues, she said, while others may just be handicapped, and only able to earn a part-time salary along with AISH (Assisted Income for the Severely Handicapped) benefits.
