Accommodation in Edinburgh is plentiful but it can be expensive, especially at peak times such as during the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe in August or over the Christmas/Hogmanay period. At the very cheap end there are plenty of hostels; while several budget hotel chains have operations in the Scottish capital. The city s universities also make accommodation available.
Prices vary considerably and hotels, in particular, have a range of different tariffs which change significantly according to such factors as time of year, method of booking or how far ahead the booking is made. The prices given below will are based on currently quoted prices for the peak summer period (August 2010).
Some individual hotels in Edinburgh offer relatively cheap rooms but the budget cheap ticket hotel chains offer a reasonable guaranteed standard of accommodation to go with it. Like all other hotels, budget hotel prices are substantially higher in August than in, say, February, but their costs compare favourably with the higher-end luxury hotels which proliferate in the city centre.
The Holiday Inn chain has Express hotels in Picardy Place, just to the north of the city centre, and two miles further out in Leith, as well as in St Mary's Street in the very centre of Edinburgh s Old Town. All of these offer twin rooms for around 145, including a hot buffet breakfast. Two larger cheap ticket Holiday Inns are located further out in the west of the city (doubles from around 185).
The Premier Inn chain runs several hotels around Edinburgh, two of them very close to the city centre (at Haymarket and in Lauriston Place). Five other hotels are located on the outskirts of the city. Double rooms are available in August from approximately 120 but exclude breakfast.
Edinburgh has several universities and colleges which provide student accommodation for many thousands of people: much of this accommodation is available to rent for non-students during the summer and in some cases at Easter. Although most of this accommodation is on a self-catering basis, some serviced rooms are also available in student cheap ticket halls of residence.
Edinburgh University runs a hotel at its Pollock Halls site in Newington, just to the south of the city centre. Salisbury Green Hotel is open all year and offers standard double cheap ticket rooms at 129 including breakfast. Lunch and evening meal are also available in the campus refectory (costing 8.50 and 12.25 respectively).
The Pollock Halls campus stands cheap ticket in the shadow of Arthur s Seat on the edge of Holyrood Park. The halls of residence have over 2000 rooms available for rent, representing a range of facilities - some single, some double, some with shared facilities and others en-suite. Rooms with television and internet access are available. An en-suite double room at peak time costs 86.50 and includes breakfast.
Edinburgh has a number of hostels for those on a really tight budget. Mostly cheap ticket used by backpackers, they offer a bed in a dormitory for a few pounds and many also offer an option of single, double or even family rooms for a slightly higher charge. Facilities cheap ticket are often basic but many offer use of a kitchen; several have an enviably central location and many accept group bookings.
The Scottish Youth Hostels Association owns two hostels in Edinburgh, one very central in the Cowgate (summer only) and one in Leith Walk. Membership cheap ticket of the Association is not essential to stay at the hostels, which offer a range of quality facilites with rooms from single to dormitory. Accommodation costs from 16 per person per night.

These hotels and hostels represent only some of the range of accommodation available in the city. It should be noted that it s always cheap ticket advisable to book ahead, especially during the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe cheap ticket in August, when demand for all categories of accommodation both from visitors and performers - is at its height.
