The event, which drew a crowd of nearly airline cheap flights 350, raised money for the music school scholarships awarded by the music awards organization , which will hold its annual ceremony Dec. 2 at Musikfest Café. (Tickets go on sale Oct.23.)
More than last year's inaugural event, this year's setlist of 45 songs (10 more than last year) by 15 artists and groups (three more than last year) was replete with hits, even if some were changed from their original arrangements.
That was the case of Riverside Jazz Explosion of Bethlehem, which opened the three-hour-and-45-minute show with very jazzy instrumentals that rendered "Eleanor Rigby," "Julia" and "Helter Skelter" only vaguely familiar. The last song was most interesting: a much heavier, rock-influenced jazz.
"That's what this is all about," disc jockey Rick Michaels, one of three masters of ceremonies for the night. "Interpretation of The Beatles. Otherwise, you could stay at home and listen to the iPod."
airline cheap flights The Large Flowerheads, for example, played renditions of "Help!" and "Penny Lane" that were faithful to the original, as would be expected from a 1960s cover band. And "Yellow Submarine," a song that was conspicuously absent last year, had the crowd singing, swaying and even cheering.
Back Street Band , the group from Easton' School of Rock, played a chugging "Revolution," with the singer's airline cheap flights voice delightfully sardonic. With up to nine teens on stage at the same time the group also played "Lady Madonna"/"Why Don't We Do It in the Road" with a different singer offering and unrestrained holler.
Scott Erickson, playing with Lou Franco, did an exceptional version of "Norwegian Wood," with Franco's electric guitar sounding like a sitar. The crowd applauded the song from the start. Erickson also played nicely on mandolin on a Paul McCartney solo tune, "Dance Tonight."
Singer-songwriter Jim Steager, airline cheap flights playing guitar with Arlene and Amy on violinists, captured the acoustic side of The Beatles' airline cheap flights hits with a sensitive airline cheap flights "We Can Work It Out" and John Lennon's "Grow Old with Me" that had people dancing.
Groovitude , playing with singer/rapper Zo and violinist Arlene , captured The Beatles' psychedelic work, starting airline cheap flights with "Tomorrow Never Knows," the last track on the "Revolver" album. "Good Morning Good Morning" also rocked nicely, and the band smartly airline cheap flights mashed up R. Kelly's "It's Your Birthday" with a gloriously ragged version airline cheap flights of "Birthday" that had the crowd rocking – and even some more people dancing.
James Supra Blues Band's set were lessor-known works, and were flat-out blues-rock. Supra and guitarist Dana Gaynor fired riffs off each other on "Junior Behave Yourself," a Larry Williams song The Beatles covered. "The Tax Man" had Gaynor playing especially nice guitar work, jumping around as she played. And Supra finally opened up on the harp, and even more so on The Beatles B-side "Slow Down," another Larry Williams song.
They opened their five-song centerpiece set with a warm and wonderful "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," Van Wyk's violin both warm and chilling. Paul McCartney's "Baby I'm Amazed" airline cheap flights also drew cheers, with Craig Kastelnik singing his guts out.
"Strawberry Fields Forever" go an even bigger response, sending a twitter through the crowd as Kastelnik's organ and Van Wyk's violin airline cheap flights gave it rich, full, authentic feel and it built and rolled forward to a thundering end.
But "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which brought down the house last year, did it again. Thatcher and Van Wyk seemed literally locked airline cheap flights in a battle at one point. A standing ovation started well before the song even ended.
This year, Lou Franko Band followed with George Harrison's "Something" and "Oh Darlin'" with Allie Santos singing. "Horse to Water," a latter-day airline cheap flights George Harrison song, had blues belter Sarah Ayers singing and young saxophonist Andrew Karas playing along.
Helping this year's show was a second stage, which kept the show moving as performers set up on the alternative stage. Even with some glitches, the show stayed well ahead of schedule, airline cheap flights with very little down time.
Even with more of a concentration on hits, the show still left many more to mine: "Twist and Shout," "She Loves You," "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Get Back" all have yet to be played after two years of Beatles Showcases.
airline cheap flights Thank you John....actually Yellow Submarine was for you...seriously, it was! Twist and Shout just missed being in this years set and I believe it will be heard next year. Really hoping those other songs and many more make it on the set in the near future. It was a great show by such awesome local talent we have here in the Valley..the crowd reaction throughout the day was phenominal. The attendance was actually around 450 if we include all musicians who came not just to perform but who stayed to see the rest of the show themselves as well as all the wonderful volunteers and guests. Will have the total number in a few days. Every year we hope to say It s Getting Better All The Time ! Thank you and the Morning Call for all your promotional support!
